Mechanism
Rapidly acidifies fresh-cut forage by producing lactic acid, lowering pH quickly enough to suppress spoilage organisms (notably Clostridium) and protein/dry-matter degradation during ensiling.
Application / Format
Applied as a liquid or freeze-dried inoculant sprayed onto forage at the point of harvest/chopping, before ensiling.
Target Use
Dairy and beef cattle, buffalo and other ruminants fed silage — evidenced on alfalfa, and the same mechanism is widely applied across maize, sorghum and mixed forages.
The same organism behind EmerrAqua Balance in EmerrBio's aquaculture range, but doing an entirely different job here — fermenting harvested forage rather than colonising a gut — to lock in feed value before it's lost to spoilage.
Research & Evidence (2 findings)
- High-moisture alfalfa silage reached pH 5.50 at 30 days versus 6.10 untreated, and stayed at pH 5.67 at 90 days versus 7.05 untreated (which had begun to spoil). — Yang et al., Front Microbiol, 2020
- The same trial found inoculated silage retained more dry matter (26.54% vs. 24.72%) and far less ammoniacal nitrogen (36.71 vs. 57.06 mg/kg) at 90 days. — Yang et al., Front Microbiol, 2020
Worth knowing: This finding is specific to high-moisture alfalfa and the strain tested; ensiling outcomes vary by forage type, moisture content and harvest timing, and EmerrBio's own strain has not been independently trialled in this exact system.
