Contract Development & Manufacturing

From A Sample Or Target Molecule To Commercial-Scale Production

EmerrBio offers its full-fledged in-house lab and integrated 22,000-litre fermentation platform as a contract R&D and manufacturing service — the same capability that already produces every EmerrGrow, EmerrAqua, EmerrThrive and EmerrBiome product on this site, made available directly to clients with their own sample, strain or target molecule.

Strain Development

Isolate, identify and characterise a genuinely new candidate organism from your own sample or target trait — the same isolation-to-characterisation pipeline behind every EmerrBio product range.

Metabolite & Bioproduct Expression

Ferment a candidate or client-specified strain to produce a target metabolite or bioproduct, then recover, purify and supply it to specification.

Scale-Up: Shake Flask to 10,000L

Take a bench-scale process through seed and pilot fermentation to full 10,000-litre commercial-scale production, on the platform behind EmerrBio's own portfolio.

Where Every Engagement Can Begin: Isolation Through Characterization

Bring a sample — soil from a specific region, a gut or environmental source, a traditional fermented food — or simply a target trait you're trying to solve for. EmerrBio runs the same isolation-to-characterisation pipeline used for our own product ranges exclusively on your behalf.

STEP 01

Isolation

Candidate organisms are cultured and isolated from environmental or biological samples — soil, plant material, gut or fermented-food sources — using selective and enrichment culturing techniques.

STEP 02

Morphological & Biochemical ID

Gram staining, colony and cell morphology, and biochemical test panels narrow each isolate to a likely genus and species.

STEP 03

Molecular ID

16S rRNA sequencing (and whole-genome sequencing where warranted) confirms species- and strain-level identity with a certainty morphology alone cannot provide.

STEP 04

Functional & Safety Characterization

Candidate strains are screened for the functional trait of interest and for safety — including antibiotic-resistance and pathogenicity screening — before any strain is considered for scale-up.

How an engagement runs: timelines and deliverables are assessed project by project — the right scope depends on the sample or strain, the target trait or molecule, and how much development work is needed before a process is viable at scale. Not every project reaches a commercially viable outcome on the first attempt — that possibility is part of any genuine R&D process, and we would rather say so than promise a guaranteed result.
2. Metabolite & Bioproduct Expression

Turning A Strain Into A Target Molecule, At Scale

Once a strain is selected — newly isolated or already in hand — the next question is what it should be made to produce at scale. EmerrBio's expression service ferments the organism itself and recovers what it naturally produces: a metabolite, enzyme, biopolymer or other bioactive output, rather than starting from a foreign gene inserted into a separate production host.

Fermentation Metabolites & Biopolymers

Purified fermentation output supplied as a powder or liquid concentrate. EmerrBio already runs this exact service internally: EmerrGrow Retain, a poly-γ-glutamic acid biopolymer, is produced on the same Bacillus fermentation platform behind two of our other products and purified for supply — a working proof point, not a theoretical capability.

Enzymes & Bioactive Proteins

Native, strain-produced enzymes and bioactive proteins recovered from the fermentation broth or cell biomass, for further formulation or downstream use.

Organic Acids & Biosurfactants

Fermentation-derived organic acids and biosurfactant compounds, recovered and supplied to a client's specification.

Whole-Cell & Biomass Preparations

Dried whole-cell biomass or cell-wall preparations — the same category of output behind EmerrAqua Boost's yeast biomass — for use as a functional ingredient in its own right.

Worth knowing: This service currently centers on strain-native (non-recombinant) fermentation: growing an organism to produce, at scale, what it already makes. If your project specifically needs a foreign gene expressed in a separate production host (heterologous/recombinant expression), share your target molecule and timeline and we'll confirm whether and how it fits before scoping anything further.
3. Scale-Up: Shake Flask to 10,000L

The Same Path We Use For Our Own Portfolio

EmerrBio's fermentation platform is built to take a strain, consortium or expression process from a lab-scale flask trial through to full commercial-scale production — the same bench-to-10,000L path used across all four industries on this site.

STEP 01

Shake Flask / Bench Trial

Initial growth and process characterisation at flask scale, establishing baseline growth kinetics and product yield for the strain and target output.

STEP 02

Seed & Pilot Fermentation

The process steps up through seed fermenters into pilot-scale batches (up to 1,000L), where feed strategy, pH, temperature and aeration are optimised for the specific strain and product.

STEP 03

Commercial-Scale Fermentation

The optimised process transfers to commercial-scale vessels — up to 10,000 litres per batch — on the same integrated platform behind EmerrBio's own EmerrGrow, EmerrAqua, EmerrThrive and EmerrBiome ranges.

STEP 04

Downstream Recovery & Documentation

Harvested product is recovered, purified and documented to specification, with the same Certificate of Analysis, Safety Data Sheet and batch-wise QC record standard that ships with every EmerrBio product.

4. Other CRO Services

Beyond Strain Development, Expression & Scale-Up

Custom Formulation & Blending

Multi-strain, strain-plus-metabolite or strain-plus-yeast formulations built to a client's specification, in the spirit of the Complete blends across every EmerrBio range.

Analytical & QC Testing

In-house microbiology and analytical testing — including plate-count CFU verification — available in support of a client's own strain or fermentation batch, not only EmerrBio's own products.

Documentation & Technology Transfer

A full characterisation report, batch records, Certificate of Analysis and Safety Data Sheet, plus transfer of the developed process and supporting documentation at project completion.

FAQ

CRO Services — Frequently Asked Questions

What CRO / contract development services does EmerrBio offer?

Three core services: custom strain isolation and characterisation from a client's own sample or target trait, fermentation-based expression of a target metabolite or bioproduct, and scale-up of a bench-scale process through pilot to full 10,000-litre commercial fermentation — plus custom formulation, analytical/QC testing and technology transfer.

Does EmerrBio do recombinant/heterologous protein expression, or only native fermentation?

Our current CRO service centers on strain-native fermentation — a metabolite or bioproduct the organism already makes. If your project needs a foreign gene expressed in a separate production host, tell us your target molecule and timeline and we'll confirm whether and how it fits before scoping anything further.

What lab capability backs EmerrBio's CRO services?

A full-fledged in-house lab covering strain isolation and characterisation and fermentation-based expression — the same lab and 22,000-litre platform behind every product on this site.

What's the largest batch size EmerrBio can run?

Up to 10,000 litres per commercial batch, on the same integrated 22,000-litre fermentation platform used for EmerrBio's own EmerrGrow, EmerrAqua, EmerrThrive and EmerrBiome ranges.

Is there proof EmerrBio has done fermentation-based metabolite production before, not just strain manufacturing?

Yes — EmerrGrow Retain, a poly-γ-glutamic acid biopolymer, is produced on EmerrBio's own Bacillus fermentation platform, then purified and supplied as a powder or liquid concentrate. It's a live example of the same service offered here.

What happens if my sample or target strain doesn't yield a viable candidate?

Not every isolation or development attempt succeeds on the first try — that possibility is part of any genuine R&D process. EmerrBio would rather say so upfront than promise a guaranteed outcome; scope and next steps are agreed project by project.
