Candidate organisms are cultured and isolated from environmental or biological samples — soil, plant material, gut or fermented-food sources — using selective and enrichment culturing techniques.
Morphological & Biochemical ID
Gram staining, colony and cell morphology, and biochemical test panels narrow each isolate to a likely genus and species.
Molecular ID
16S rRNA sequencing (and whole-genome sequencing where warranted) confirms species- and strain-level identity with a certainty morphology alone cannot provide.
Functional & Safety Characterization
Candidate strains are screened for the functional trait of interest and for safety — including antibiotic-resistance and pathogenicity screening — before any strain is considered for scale-up.
